Healthier Options for Thanksgiving Dinner

Many folks are likely finalizing their menus for Thanksgiving Day.  There are a few ways to lessen health concerns when it comes to preparing the star of the meal.

There are options to consider.  Turkey can be roasted, fried, or smoked. Scott County Extension Agent Connie Minch says no matter how it's cooked, turkey gets a healthier grade than any red meat.

And Minch adds, losing the skin is another way to reduce calories.

"After the turkey is prepared, when we're eating the turkey we can cut the skin away and that is going to lower the fat and there by lower the calorie intake," said Minch.

While fried turkey may not be as healthy as the roasted or smoked variety, Minch says it's not as bad as it sounds.  "Yes, it is higher in calorie, higher in fat and higher in saturated fat than its roasted counterpart, but not considerably higher," added Minch.

Minch realizes the Thanksgiving meal often includes calorie heavy items like mashed potatoes, gravy, and rich desserts.  She advises indulging just a little on Thanksgiving to avoid feeling guilty.  ?
