Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes officially kicked off her campaign Tuesday night in Lexington. The state’s top Democrats were on hand to lend their support.
Governor Steve Beshear was among the virtual who’s who list of Democratic guests drumming up support for the 34-year-old Secretary of State as she officially launched her campaign.
Making appearances were Speaker of the House Greg Stumbo, former Governors Martha Layne Collins and Paul Patton… and President Bill Clinton via video.
After making her way to podium to the strains of Neil Diamond’s Kentucky Woman, Grimes told an estimated crowd of more than 1600 people that the Bluegrass needs a new voice in Washington.
"I'm here to tell you Sen. McConnell, it stops now."
Grimes was careful to distinguish herself as an opponent of President Obama’s policies on coal, which Attorney General Jack Conway said will be important as Kentuckians weigh the candidates. But he says Tuesday night’s rally showed Grimes is up to the challenge.
Grimes’ endorsements from heavy hitters in the Democratic Party have led to a lawsuit by another candidate, Owensboro contractor Ed Marksberry, who is alleging that party leaders are breaking their own bylaws playing favorites during the primary.
