If you're doing some holiday shopping for a child in middle school or anyone who enjoys a simply good read, consider picking up this week's recommended read, Liar & Spy by Rebecca Stead, from Katherine Farmer, Coordinator of the Racers Children's Preview Collection at Murray State University.
Do you ever wonder who the person in the top floor apartment really is? How far would you go to find out? When does a game go too far? Do you wish that your parents had spelled your name normally instead of originally when you were born? What does it mean to be popular? Would you give up your friends to be part of the popular table?
In Rebecca Stead's Liar & Spy, Georges (spelled with a silent s at the end) moves to a new apartment in Brooklyn after his father loses his job. At the apartment, he meets an interesting family with homeschooled children named Pigeon, Safer, and Candy. Through Safer, he is quickly enveloped in a game of spying and lying and the mysterious Mr. X that he can't be sure what is real or not. With his parents coping with the new reality of their finances, he is not sure who he can confide in. At school, Georges is abandoned by his best friend for the cool table and is constantly teased by the cool table for the way his name is spelled among other things.
Sounds hopeless for Georges? Discover how Georges copes and finds happiness under pressure, read Liar & Spy by Rebecca Stead.
