Heavy traffic surrounding the August 21st total solar eclipse has federal and state transportation officials on edge. Officials said potential delays and safety are the primary concerns.

There are more than 20 interstates and federal highways combined in the path of the total solar eclipse on August 21st. That has Associate Administrator with with the Office of Operations in the Federal Highway Administration Martin Knopp concerned with potential increased safety risks. He said the cabinet is encouraging recreational and commercial drivers to prepare for heavier traffic than usual, and to not stop on interstates or highways to watch the eclipse.

“If everyone is driving, staring up at the sky, or on the side of the road staring up at the sky, then who is looking out for each other? We’re looking at a wonderful event but we need to look out for each other along the way.”

The Kentucky Cabinet of Transportation is warning local businesses that the heavy traffic could hinder employees from commuting to work and slow product deliveries. KYTC suggests businesses consider more flexible work schedules and encourage employees to have a full tank of gas before the day of the eclipse. The Cabinet of Transportation has put together a website with safety information and travel tips to prepare.
