Education Commissioner Holliday's Budget Concerns

By Gary Pitts

Frankfort, KY – As the year starts and the Kentucky General Assembly is in session, state education officials are trying to deal with numerous issues, including new common core standards, end-course-assessments, and teacher evaluations. But State Education Commissioner Terry Holliday says his biggest concern at this time is the budget.

"I think it's very difficult for our local school districts and our local classroom teachers to deal with implementing new common core standards, and new assessment and accountability when the budgets are being cut. So I think the biggest push in the General Assembly right now is, how can we provide our teachers with what they need in these very difficult budget times?"

Holliday noted that education was a focus of Governor Steve Beshear's State of the Commonwealth Address. He says he will be interested to hear the governor's budget address next Tuesday. Holliday spoke this morning at a press conference at Murray Elementary School.
