Ed Commissioner Holds Listening Sessions Across the Commonwealth

Commissioner of Education Dr. Stephen Pruitt is holding 11 listening sessions in Kentucky. Sessions begin tonight in Shelbyville and end April 28. He says he wants to know what people value in Kentucky education.

“I want to create a system that will guarantee equity, achievement and integrity. So to do that I felt like we really needed to be out and about and listening to what I call our shareholders, all the people who are invested in a quality education for kids, what they had to say and what they value,”

Pruitt says it’s too early to speculate on how he thinks the proposed budget cuts will affect his goals and the commonwealth’s educational system. Dr. Pruitt will be in Murray, Thursday, April 18.

He says he plans on limiting his speaking to 15 minutes before sitting down to listen.

“As commissioner I don’t believe I can make the best decisions if I just stay here in Frankfort, I think I’ve gotta be out and listen to our citizens, and I’m really excited about it,”

Pruitt says he will begin by explaining the current accountability system in Kentucky and the new Every Student Succeeds Act. For questions and comments about the listening sessions email kyedlistens@education.ky.gov
