The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management has extended the contract for the conversion of depleted uranium hexafluoride in Paducah.
BWXT Conversion Services converts leftover DUF6 from the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. Their DOE contract was set to expire at the end of the year, but has been extended nine months for about $68 million. The D-O-E says this will allow conversion operations to continue uninterrupted as the department selects and transitions to a new contract.
The D-O-E is converting more than 700,000 tons of DUF6 left over from decades of uranium enrichment to a more stable form for reuse or disposal.
