A man with a duffel bag and a syringe sticking out of his arm led McCracken County Sheriff’s deputies into the Ohio River Wednesday.

According to a news release, the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department received a call at approximately 4:30 p.m., about a man that was lying at the end of Metropolis Ferry Landing Road. A caller told dispatchers the man  later identified as being 33-year-old Dustin A. Alderdice of Burna (Livingston Co.), Ky. appeared to be deceased with a syringe sticking out of his arm.

Deputies Trent Hardin and Brock Martin arrived minutes after the call was received. They saw Alderdice near where the road ends due to flooding. He ran, jumped into the water and began swimming towards Harrah’s Casino. He was carrying a duffel bag that he threw into a wooded area.

Deputies say it was obvious Alderdice appeared to be under the influence of some type of drug. He was screaming out to a woman he thought was with him. Both deputies got in the water and swam out in an attempt to take the man into custody, as well as save him from the water.

After a pursuit in the water deputies reportedly subdued him and placed Alderdice on a floating log.

The duffel bag was located and numerous plastic baggies and other items were found in the bag which was consistent with illegal drug use.

Alderdice and both deputies received some medical treatment.

Alderdice faces multiple charges, including public intoxication, resisting arrest, fleeing or evading and criminal mischief.
