Democratic Lawmakers Ask Court to Join Attorney General's Lawsuit Against Gov. Bevin

LRC Public Information

A trio of Democratic lawmakers are trying to join Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear’s lawsuit against Gov. Matt Bevin over his recent order to cut state university budgets 4.5 percent for the remainder of this fiscal year. Beshear has challenged Bevin's order, saying it is an illegal overreach.

State Representatives Mary Lou Marzian, Darryl Owens and Jim Wayne filed motions to join the suit Tuesday in Franklin Circuit Court. All three are from Louisville.

"We applaud the courage of the attorney general and his readiness to stand up for students and middle class families who will almost certainly face tuition increases in light of these cuts,” Wayne said in a news release issued by House leadership.

The court will hear arguments on the motion next Thursday, April 21.
