Death of Kindergarten Student Prompts Effort for School Bus Escorts

Author: Mario Sánchez Prada, Wikimedia Commons

A Bowling Green woman is contacting state and federal legislators in Kentucky and circulating petitions in an effort to gain support for what she’s named “Jayden’s Law.”

Shay Riney’s 5-year-old cousin, Jayden Hawkins, was struck and killed by his Butler County school bus on October 28, just after he got off in front of his home.

Riney said she would like to see a law passed that requires adults to be on school buses to escort elementary age children on and off, to prevent more tragic accidents.

“They’re completely preventable because if someone was with them, the bus driver wouldn’t leave until the escort was back on the bus. So there would be a significantly reduced chance of this happening again.”

Riney said she’s urging Gov. Steve Beshear, Sen. Rand Paul and Congressman Brett Guthrie to to support her efforts to enact Jayden’s Law.
