deanarcos.com

The Drug Enforcement Agency special agents that inspired the Netflix series Narcos will speak tonight at Murray State University. Javier Pena and Steve Murphy share their story tracking down notorious drug trafficker Pablo Escobar.

Pena and Murphy were assigned in Bogota, Colombia in 1988 and 1991 respectively and became partners. Working with the Colombian National Police, they were active participants in the criminal manhunt, which resulted in dismantling the Medellin Cartel.

They were the first non-Colombian nationals awarded the Distinguished Service Cross by the Colombian National Police. Their experience is the basis of the Netflix series Narcos. They were also in the National Geographic program Facing Escobar.

The lecture is in the Curris Center Ballroom at 8 p.m. The event is open to the public.

Matt Markgraf joined the WKMS team as a student in January 2007. He's served in a variety of roles over the years: as News Director March 2016-September 2019 and previously as the New Media & Promotions Coordinator beginning in 2011. Prior to that, he was a graduate and undergraduate assistant. He is currently the host of the international music show Imported on Sunday nights at 10 p.m.
