Datebook: November 11 - Crafts Fair, Native American Languages, Mary Wheeler

The Hopkins County-Madisonville Public Library holds its 2014 Fall Arts and Crafts Fair this Saturday from 10 to 7. The event features handmade items and local crafts. The library is located in the Parkway Plaza Mall.

Tomorrow at 11, West Kentucky Community and Technical College offers a free presentation titled "Code Talkers: Native American Languages Used in the World Wars." The presentation examines the Native Americans who fought in our military, utilizing code from their languages that proved unbreakable by the enemy.

The hour-long presentation takes place at WKCTC’s Matheson Library. Nathan Lynn, Special Collections Librarian at the McCracken County Public Library, presents “Mary Wheeler and the Ohio River Valley Roustabouts” Thursday evening at 7 at the library. In the 1930s, musicologist Mary Wheeler began documenting the songs of the Roustabouts who worked on the packet boats. The free presentation features photographs and musical notation from the library’s collection.
