The new Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris was packed to see Igor Stravinsky'sThe Rite of Spring. The dancers took the stage and in the first stamping, discordant notes of "Augurs of Spring" the audience completely lost their composure. Theatergoers shouted in disgust, banged on the seats, attacked each other and hurled things at the orchestra. One critic called the show "a laborious and puerile barbarity."
