Datebook: April 2 - Ponce de Leon Discovers Florida 500 Years Ago

On this day in 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon led a small fleet to what he thought was another island. He named it La Florida, because of its verdant landscape. Legend says Leon was searching for the Fountain of Youth to cure his aging, which he thought could be found in Florida.

The second annual Mutt Strut is Saturday morning beginning at the corner of 15th and Olive streets. Registration for the 5K run and 1-mile dog walk starts at 7:30, with the 5K beginning at 8:30 and the dog walk starting at 9:30.  To pre-register, call 759-1884.

 
Trained AARP volunteers offer free tax help tomorrow from 9 to 2 at the Murray-Calloway County Senior Citizens Center.  Bring a copy of last year’s tax return, W-2s, 1099s, and Social Security cards or other official documentation.  Make an appointment by calling 753-0929.
 
Registration is now open for the Operation Respect Workshop, set for April 10 from 9 to 3 at Murray State University’s Curris Center.  School personnel, grad students, and undergrad students are invited to attend.  The workshop focuses on bullying and school violence.  Register by calling 809-3235.
