Constitutional Change Could Ban TN Income Tax

By Chris Taylor

Nashville, TN – A proposed change to Tennessee's constitution could declare an income and payroll tax unconstitutional. Germantown Republican Senator Brian Kelsey sponsored the measure and says it's necessary because of the poor state of the economy. The Senate Finance Committee yesterday voted to approve the proposal in a 7 to 3 vote. The Clarksville Leaf Chronicle reports the earliest it could go before voters is in 2014. Senator Kelsey says even though the state constitution already bans an income tax, the difficult economic times have already prompted eight lawmakers to try to pass an income tax.
