Coal Company Considering Layoffs in Ohio, Muhlenberg Counties

Austin Ramsey, WKMS

A major coal operation in Ohio County could be shutting down one of its mines in the coming months. Armstrong Coal operates seven western Kentucky mines and all but one are located in Ohio County.

Notices of possible layoffs were recently issued to the 75 employees at the company’s Midway Mine in Centertown.

Ohio County Judge-Executive David Johnston says the coal industry is facing a number of major challenges.

“The competition from other fuels, oil and natural gas - that’s one thing," Johnston said. "The regulations on the coal burning generating plants make it hard for them as well.”

Armstrong Coal has also issued notices to 58 workers at the Parkway Mine in Muhlenberg County.

A final decision on closures and layoffs is expected in the next month.
