City of Murray Eliminates City Administrator Position

Murray city administrator Matt Mattingly's position is being eliminated from city operations as recently-elected mayor Jack Rose takes on many of the job's responsibilities himself.

In an email to city council members Thursday, Rose stated Mattingly's last day on the job will be May 7. According to the statement, both Rose and Mattingly reached "a mutual understanding and feel this action is in the best interests of the city."

“All I have is high marks for Matt and our working relationship has been 100 percent,” Rose said. “It had nothing to do with anything other than the fact that I’ve actually taken on a lot of responsibilities that the city manager had been responsible for in the past.”

Mattingly has been with the city for 11 years. Rose, a former Murray State University faculty regent, was narrowly elected over Bill Wells in last November's election. Before taking office in January, Rose said he wanted to make City Hall offices work more efficiently.

“I’m going to talk to some other people about how they can help me - some folks here," Rose said. "Matter of fact, I’ve talked with one individual already about how we might share some responsibilities.”

Rose declined to identify the other city officials who might be involved.

The city administrator position paid around $80,000 a year, according to Rose.

Mattingly did not return a request for comment Thursday.
