Christian County Officials To Develop Contingency Plan in Event of DoDEA Cuts
Christian County School Officials are discussing a possible contingency plan should the school face an influx of students from Fort Campbell.
The issue came up during a Local Planning Committee meeting concerning long-term facility upgrades last week.
Christian County Schools Chief Operations Officer Kathy Hancock said if hypothetical cuts to the Department of Defense Education Activity were to occur, the bulk of students from Fort Campbell would be obliged to transition into Christian County given the base’s Kentucky address.
Hancock said Christian County would not be able to immediately accommodate for the nearly 6,500 students given its budget constraints. The CC school board announced earlier this week that it will be shuttering two elementary schools in its district within the next two years.
Hancock said with this being the year of the federal sequestration, the school board needs to develop a contingency plan sooner than later.
“Just about every year, that comes through the military that there’s a possibility," said Hancock. "So, every year we have conversation with them and we will be having conversations with them in the future to basically have a plan if that does occur”
Fort Campbell could not confirm or deny if such cuts were in the DoD’s immediate future.
Hancock said the school will be meeting with Ft. Campbell officials in December for further talks.
