Candidates for State Auditor Rank Pension Issues High on the To Do List

Strengthening the financial security of state employee and teacher pensions is a priority of both candidates vying to become Kentucky’s next state auditor.

Republican Mike Harmon says new rules for new hires can help to stabilize retirement funds.

“Those that start new, if they start under a certain promise, then it’s okay to make that change,” said Harmon.

Harmon, a state representative from Boyle County, stresses that for those already in the system, retirement promises need to be kept.

Incumbent Adam Edelen, a Democrat seeking his second term in office, agrees that pension issues are pressing.

“We’re gonna have to bring the oversight of this office in a more concrete way to the performance of our pension systems,” said Edelen.

Edelen and Harmon appeared together on this week’s edition of ‘Kentucky Tonight’ on KET.
