As Northside Baptist Pastor Brett Miles led the devotional and prayer for a group of approximately 70 Trump supporters Friday morning, he asked the group to acknowledge the luxury of calling this country home.
“Don’t you feel privileged to be an American today?" Miles said.
The Murray-Calloway County Republican Party hosted a "Prayer Luncheon" to support the inauguration of the 45th US President.
“That man is Donald Trump. Whether that makes you happy or that makes you sad, that position demands and deserves our prayers.” Miles said.
While this same sentiment was not afforded during Democratic President Barack Obama’s inauguration, Chair of the local GOP Greg DeLancey said the day was not about affiliation, but being American.
After booking the Crossroads restaurant DeLancey said he realized the name, Crossroads, was symbolic for the state of the country.
"There are two sides to this whole issue of where we need to go. So maybe its fitting that we are standing here, and of course this event is going to occur, based on celebrating a direction change for the future." DeLancey explained.
Two Calloway natives Joyce Fox and Ken Norsworthy were at the Crossroads restaurant where the event took place.
“Our country was founded on religious beliefs and we need to continue that if we want to be blessed.” Said Fox.
Norsworthy, sitting at another table across the room agreed, that the country "needs God back in the White House." Norsworthy says God has been absent from the nation's capital for too long.
"I don’t think Trump is God but I think he is a godly man,”Norsworthy said.
Acknowledging that Trump has been divorced, the attendees say no one is perfect. But they believe Trump has the ability to make America great again by bringing back jobs and stopping abortion.
