Budget bill could cut county jail revenue

By Rebecca Feldhaus

Murray, KY – Five Kentucky groups are joining together to stop legislation that would cut an estimated 20 million dollars in county jail revenue. The House budget bill would allow Class D felons out of jail early, thus cutting state monies given to county jails. Class D felonies are non-violent and non-sexual crimes. Calloway County Jailer Phil Hazle says the county jail receives a little over 30 dollars per felon they house per day. The groups involved include the Kentucky Association of Counties, Kentucky County Judge Executive Association, Kentucky Jailers Association, Kentucky Magistrates and Commissioners Association, Kentucky Sheriffs Association and Kentucky County Attorneys Association. The budget bill is now in the Senate for consideration.
