Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Jeff Bivins will take over as chief justice next month.

According to the court, Bivins was unanimously elected by his fellow jurors to a four-year term. He replaces current Chief Justice Sharon Lee.

Bivins was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2014 by Gov. Bill Haslam. Before that, he served on the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals for three years. He also has served as a trial court judge and on the Board of Judicial Conduct. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Law.

The chief justice is responsible for the court's administrative functions.

In a news release, Bivins praises Lee for helping modernize the court system and says it is "a privilege to guide the court on the heels of her excellent leadership."
