Bevin Not Backing Away from Proposed Higher Ed Funding Cuts

Alix Mattingly, WFPL

Governor Matt Bevin is not backing away from his proposed funding cuts for public higher education institutions across Kentucky.

Bevin told reporters yesterday while he’s anticipating about 13.5% less funding for public universities over the next two and half years, he’s not requesting monthly quotas. The governor said it’s up to the presidents to plan accordingly.

“Allow attrition, for example, that you know are going to happen.  You know, retirements, whatever the case might be, that are gonna happen in six and nine and 18 months to be factored into your collective overall.  You know the numbers you are going to receive less in funding," he says.

During the House Budget Review Subcommittee meeting Wednesday, Bowling Green Representative Jim DeCesare said he expects performance based funding for universities to be off the table this session. Governor Bevin agreed, saying any funding based on university performance would begin with the 2018 budget.
