Beshear Announces Formation of Ky. Elder Abuse Task Force

Tyler Olson, 123RF

Attorney General Andy Beshear held a ceremony in Frankfort Wednesday to honor World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The event was also was to announce the formation of the Elder Abuse Task Force.

U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky Kerry Harvey came together with the attorney of the Western District to represent two of ten districts across the nation selected for the Elder Justice Task Force. Its purpose, Harvey says, is to protect the elderly from a host of problems such as abuse and neglect in nursing homes, and identity theft.

“...With a particular focus on the most vulnerable Americans, and our elder population falls into that category, which unfortunately is exploited in a variety of ways.”

In a news release, Beshear said that his office has made defense of the Elderly a core mission of his office, and says he is ready to aid the task force to help seniors across the Commonwealth. Thousands of seniors are said to be abused each year in Kentucky, a problem that Attorney Kerry Harvey says he hopes the formation of the force will curb.
