BBB Alert About Scammers Posing As Microsoft Reps

Kentucky computer users are being alerted to a modified scam where con artists use a Microsoft reference in their unethical pitch.

Heather Clary with the Better Business Bureau of Central and Eastern Kentucky says previous scams focused on tech support claims. She says the most current con has scammers telling those they contact to renew their Microsoft license key or their computers will go dark.

“Instead of actually helping you, they’re putting a virus on it that will allow them to steal your information and if you do banking and bill paying and have sensitive information on that computer, they can get a hold of that and possible clean out your other accounts,” Clary said.

Clary says Microsoft officials stress the computer and software company never proactively reaches out to customers to provide unsolicited PC or technical support.
