August 29 - Speedy Gonzales Debuts 60 Years Ago

"The Fastest Mouse in all Mexico" made his first appearance on this day in Cat-Tails for Two. A prototype for his more iconic later form, he is seen in a red shirt, running from two cats, Bennie and George. In 1999, Cartoon Network ceased to show Speedy, in an effort to clamp down on ethnic stereotypes.

Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park hosts an “End of the Summer Beach Blast” Saturday, with beach volleyball, limbo contests, a DJ, and more. Barbecue plates are available from 11 to 2 for $7 each. Bring a beach chair, umbrella, and towels. 

The Humane Society of Calloway County hosts a Pet ID Clinic Saturday at the new location of the Little Shop of Collars, inside Trends N Treasures mall on US 641 South. Microchipping is available for $10 from 10 to 2 and engraved pet tags are available for $3 from 10 to 6. Bring pets to the side entrance facing 641. For more information, visit forthepets.org.

Tomorrow’s the deadline for artists to register for Arts ’Round the Square, the centerpiece of Eye-Full of Paris Weekend. Artists can show, sell, and demonstrate their wares on the lawn of the Henry County Courthouse from 9 to 4 during the September 28th event. Registration forms at phcarts.com.
