[Audio] 'Women in Telecom Golf Day' Raises Scholarship Funds for Women in TSM & IT

Matt Markgraf, WKMS

Two weeks from today is the AT&T Women in Telecom Golf Day, an effort to raise scholarships funds for women in the TSM program at Murray State interested in going into the Telecom and IT career field. Program Coordinator and Marketing Specialist Annie Vandiver joins Tracy Ross on Sounds Good to talk  about the event.

Annie Vandiver says there are currently 20 or 30 women in the Murray State Telecommunications Systems Management program, many taking courses online because they work during the day. This is compared to approximately 165 men in the program.

There aren't many women in the TSM and IT fields, she says, and yet there are so many jobs available.

Because business and networking is often conducted on the golf course, this event encourages women of all golfing ability to come out, learn or improve the skill and meet with each other. The day usually welcomes 40 to 50 women. Last year was pouring down rain all day, Vandiver says, yet a lot of women stuck it out and had a good time.

Registration is preferred by September 15, for the September 17 event. Registration day of starts at 8:30, golf lessons begin at 9, followed by lunch. Sandy Hoff is the guest speaker, she is the Director of Workforce Development and Education for the Nashville Technology Council - and speaks about initiatives strengthening and improving IT workforce development in rural areas. The afternoon holds contests and golfing.
