[Audio] MSU Holds 22nd Annual Provost Concert Tuesday

Matt Markgraf, WKMS

Tuesday night, Murray State University will hold its 22nd annual Provost Concert at Lovett Auditorium. Master Gunnery Sgt. Susan Rider of the United States Marine Band and MSU Director of Bands and Orchestras Dennis Johnson speak with Tracy Ross on Sounds Good about the performance.

Rider says before she joined the Marine Corps Band, she grew up in Iowa developing her love of music. It’s always been in her family, and Rider began playing at a young age.

To become a member of “The President’s Own” band, Rider says she went through a rigorous and competitive audition process. She says there were about 70 musicians in her group fighting for just two spots.

The group tours regularly, and Rider says each performance is unique. Johnson says this is also true of Tuesday’s concert.

That event will be free, and starts at 7:30 P.M. in Murray State’s Lovett Auditorium.

Tracy started working for WKMS in 1994 while attending Murray State University. After receiving his Bachelors and Masters degrees from MSU he was hired as Operations/Web/Sports Director in 2000. Tracy hosted All Things Considered from 2004-2012 and has served as host/producer of several music shows including Cafe Jazz, and Jazz Horizons. In 2001, Tracy revived Beyond The Edge, a legacy alternative music program that had been on hiatus for several years. Tracy was named Program Director in 2011 and created the midday music and conversation program Sounds Good in 2012 which he hosts Monday-Thursday. Tracy lives in Murray with his wife, son and daughter.
