Austin Carter talks to Jay Staten about The Empty Bowls Project Dinner and Silent Auction, supporting Marcella's Kitchen which will be held Saturday, April 23rd from 11 am to 1 pm in Draffenville.

Staten says the project first started about 26 years ago, when a Michigan art teacher challenged his students to come up with a creative community service project. It’s not just in Paducah; organizations around the country create their own bowls to help feed the hungry.

The dinner is at Marshall County High School; it’ll run from 11 A.M. through 1 P.M. More than 20 food providers have signed up. Attendees can buy a bowl and a meal, then keep the handmade bowl.

A silent auction will follow, with a wide variety of items including an electric smoker, gift baskets and even veterinary services.

Marcella’s Kitchen is a community kitchen that helps to feed the hungry. Staten says she hopes to see expansion in the future to help meet demand.
