Matt Markgraf / WKMS

Early next month, the Kentucky Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials will hold its Spring Summit in Murray. Angela Guyton and Dr. Doris Sarr of the KBC-LEO stop by Sounds Good to talk about this year’s event.

This is the first time Murray has hosted the summit. Sarr says the location provides a good opportunity to bring together attendees from western Kentucky and politicians from Frankfort on the other side of the state.

Guyton says the event begins April 7 with a roundtable discussion led by community leaders along with performances from a local church dance group. The forum will include important issues facing Kentucky as well as the upcoming presidential election.

As for that Friday, April 8, the Kentucky Black Caucus will give an update on this year’s legislative session followed by a reception with live music at Pogue Library by local musician Brent Webster and his jazz quartet.

And on Saturday, Murray State President Bob Davies and KBC-LEO President Pamela Smith-Wright will speak followed by workshops on expungement, voters’ rights and elections.

Kentucky Lt. Governor Jeanine Hampton, the commonwealth’s first elected African-American official, will also speak at a luncheon. The day will conclude with an education panel that evening.

Registration is open; tickets are $65 for members, $75 for nonmembers and $10 for students. For more information and the full schedule, visit the event’s page here.
