The Gentry House in Murray will hold its 4th annual Derby Party May 7 starting at 2 p.m.

Board President Robert Lyons and Director Sherece Cole speak with Austin Carter on Sounds Good about the upcoming event.

The Gentry House is a nonprofit organization that provides transitional housing for homeless families with children. Each year, the group holds two fundraisers: one is a homeless awareness week and the other is the upcoming derby party.

Lyons says it’s a great way to spend your Kentucky Derby afternoon. While doors open before the actual race begins, there are activities planned including a silent auction and derby bingo.

Cole says the silent auction includes several items contributed from local businesses. The list includes goods like pet grooming tools, free custard from Culver’s, sunglasses, and handmade art.

Funds raised by the Gentry House go directly toward regular expenses the nonprofit incurs. That includes maintenance as well as activities and transportation for housed residents.

The Derby Party will take place at the Murray Banquet Center. Tickets cost $15 in advance or $20 at the door, and can be bought online or by calling the Gentry house.

Austin Carter is a Murray State grad and has been involved with WKMS since he was in high school. Over the years he has been a producer for WKMS and has hosted several music shows, but now calls Morning Edition his home each weekday morning.
