The Down Syndrome Association of Western Kentucky hosts its 14th Annual Buddy Walk tomorrow (Saturday) at Noble Park in Paducah to promote awareness and advocacy and to celebrate the wonderful individuals with Down Syndrome in our region. Lana Dockery, the Co-Coordinator of the Buddy Walk joined Austin Carter on Sounds Good to talk about the free event, which is rain or shine - but hopefully shine, she says.
The event starts at noon at Noble Park with food, talent show and - if no rain - inflatables and face painting for the kids. The actual walk is a short walk around the park that starts at 2pm. The Buddy Walk is also a fundraiser for the Down Syndrome Association of Western Kentucky, which provides services for families of those affected with Downs across the region. They provide informational care packets for new parents of babies with Down Syndrome, sponsor social events for families, and can even help families fund therapies or educational materials, she says.
They also give books on Down Syndrome to local libraries around the region and into the school system so community members, families and kids can become more knowledgeable.
Lana says that even if you don't personally know someone with Down Syndrome, it's great to come out the event. And that many with Down Syndrome, like her son, tend to love others in a sweet non-judgmental way, whether you're a "homeless person on a bench or the President of the United States." She also notes that just because someone has Down Syndrome doesn't mean that they're not capable of living a full and productive life.
She says even if you can't make it to the Buddy Walk tomorrow, you can still get involved or give to the local Association at dsawk.com. Or ndss.org for the National Down Syndrome Society. Lana also offers that you can contact her directly with any questions at 270-564-0949.
