Calloway County Public Library’s Sandy Linn speaks with Tracy Ross on Sounds Good about today’s visit from a baby kangaroo during the Summer Reading Program.
Today’s summer reading sessions focused on wildlife. To teach kids about nature’s most athletic animals, the National History Educational Company brought to the library creatures that fly, slither, and hop, including a kangaroo.
“He’s a baby. He’s still bottle fed and wears diapers and is adorable,” Linn said.
Linn says there are four summer reading sessions on Mondays. For those interested in meeting the baby kangaroo, the fourth session is open to the public and starts at 6:00 p.m. tonight.
The library is hosting an Adult Coloring Afternoon Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Linn says adult coloring reduces stress and anxiety, adding that many libraries have started hosting this trendy activity.
“You just come in and there are coloring sheets. You color, have some lemonade, make some new friends,” Linn said.
Coloring participants can bring their own supplies or use those provided by the library.
For next Monday’s Summer Reading Program, author, artist, musician and comic Chris Rumble will lead each session’s reading pep rally. The following Tuesday, Rumble will lead a writing workshop and an illustration workshop for kids who have just finished grades 3-6, as well as an evening workshop for adults titled “How to Publish Your Book.”
Linn says the library will also host the Humane Society children’s pet program with dogs, puppies, cats, and maybe a rooster. Kids can meet the animals between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. June 30th.
