[Audio] Artist Pinkney Herbert Talks MSU Gallery, "Artist Talk" Feb. 4

The Clara M. Eagle Gallery at Murray State University is currently displaying a collection of works from visual artist Pinkney Herbert. “Distilled: The Narrative Transformed” is comprised of 30 years of Herbert's art, and runs through February 14th. Herbert will host an “artist talk” at MSU Feb. 4.

He talks with Austin Carter on Sounds Good about the exhibit.

Herbert says the show’s chronology begins in 1985 with his work from when he lived in New York City. This art reflects his experience living in NYC’s garment district.

From there, he moved back home to Memphis, where he began teaching drawing at the University of Memphis.

Abstraction became a significant facet of his work there, and makes up a significant portion of the overall gallery.

The artist likens his abstract work to a symphony; he says language used to describe music also applies to his paintings. Improvisation and free-form progression are common themes here.

He says like with music, art is widely open to interpretation based on the viewer.

Herbert says he also enjoys using line as a unifying element. He describes it as a way to move the eye across the picture, and helps tie the whole piece together.

Talking about his artist talk tomorrow at Murray State University, Herbert says he’ll walk attendees through the gallery and answer questions about his work and life. That kicks off Feb. 4 at 5 P.M. in the Clara M. Eagle Gallery.

Austin Carter is a Murray State grad and has been involved with WKMS since he was in high school. Over the years he has been a producer for WKMS and has hosted several music shows, but now calls Morning Edition his home each weekday morning.
