Clarksville’s Austin Peay State University is implementing a new training program to help cater to its nearly 25 percent student population who’ve served in the military.

Military Student Center Coordinator JasminLinares says identifying those students is an effort to make the transition from military life to student life as easy as possible, and to do that the university is implementing a Green Zone training program.

Linares said there are a number of warning signs university faculty should be trained at identifying.

“Students who may not be paying attention, are a little fidgety, may not come to class and not tell you why. Students that have appointments but sometimes they just don’t show up or they will come back and say, you know I didn’t have a good day yesterday. So, those kind of things they might share with you and you don’t know what that means, we are going to try and cover those.” Linares said.

The Million Records Project report on Veteran Achievement in Higher Education says the majority of student veterans tend to be older, have families to support and juggle employment and school.  The new Green Zone program went live on the university’s website today (Monday) for staff to volunteer, the first training session will take place July 15th.
