The American Red Cross is assisting in recovery efforts in Hopkinsville following the storms that impacted the area on Saturday.

The Red Cross is currently operating a shelter at Saint John United Methodist Church. Western Kentucky Red Cross executive director Evelyn Miller:

“When the storm went through, we were moving folks that were not impacted. We were moving volunteers into the area to prepare to open for a shelter. It didn't take very long for us to get open.  We were open that night and then we had to move that facility today.”

The shelter is providing hot meals to victims. Case work will also be provided for those who can’t get back into their homes. An EF2 tornado struck parts of Hopkinsville Saturday night.

Miller said the Red Cross is there to help those who are even prepared for disasters like this one.

“We may be prepared physically for a disaster. We may have our plans in place, our insurance in place, our go bags in place, but when it happens, it's just devastating because we don't really think it's going to happen to us. So we're able to help provide somebody to help walk them through the situation." Miller said.

13 people were housed in the shelter as of Monday afternoon. The tornado damaged areas on Fort Campbell Boulevard and Calvin Drive, including an apartment complex. No major injuries have been reported.
