The American Quilter’s Society show is underway in Paducah this week. The quilt show kicked off last night as the group named winners in all of its categories.

Miriam Coffey of Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, has been coming to the show for a decade and entered her first quilt winning first place in the modern category.

“I always put Paducah on such a high pedestal for quilt shows because the caliber of quilts that are in here are just remarkable. You can’t beat it,” she said. “So just to get in to win anything is just I can’t even talk because it’s just so exciting.”

Karen Kay Buckley and RenaeHaddadin from Carlisle, Pennsylvania, took home Best of Show. AQS President Meredith Schroeder says Buckley and Haddadin weren’t there to receive the honor but the latter is coming to Paducah tomorrow for the show.

“Karen Kay Buckley, just had open heart surgery. So, she just got home from the hospital when I spoke with her and she was so excited,” Schroeder said. “But Renae Haddadin, they work together…. The quilt was done on a long-arm and these two girls won two-years-ago.”

The event will bring in an estimated 30,000 people from all over the globe to Paducah and runs through Saturday.

Whitney grew up listening to Car Talk to and from her family’s beach vacation each year, but it wasn’t until a friend introduced her to This American Life that radio really grabbed her attention. She is a recent graduate from Union University in Jackson, Tenn., where she studied journalism. When she’s not at WKMS, you can find her working on her backyard compost pile and garden, getting lost on her bicycle or crocheting one massive blanket.
