A Franklin Circuit Judge has ordered Florida-based student loan company Liberty Tax and Student Loan Defense to stop operating in Kentucky.

The state’s Attorney General Andy Beshear said Tuesday thatJudge Thomas Wingate’s orderwas granted earlier this month.

He says it will help protect Kentucky students against companies that want to collect payments on student loan debts. Beshear’s office is investigating the company for misleading college loan forgiveness claims aimed at Kentucky consumers for large fees.

His office warns students against student loan companies that make promises of immediate loan forgiveness and recommends contacting a federal loan provider instead.
