Marshall County High School increased counseling services Thursday in the wake of a shooting at a Florida high school that killed 17 people.
It’s been nearly a month since a student opened fire at Marshall County High School, killing two and injuring several others.
Angie Fisk is the Director of Personnel for Marshall County Schools. She said the high school has provided counseling services since the day after the shooting, but anticipates a higher demand after the events Wednesday.
“Kids being on social media, on the news, for a lot of these students and families it’s just bringing everything back quickly.” Fisk said.
Fisk said in watching the coverage of the Florida shooting, she knew exactly what was going on in the lives of those directly affected.
“It was a very sickening feeling, but also a lot of empathy. Because being a school system that’s been through this, we can relate exactly. It’s not just sympathetic, it’s empathetic.” Fisk said.
She said helping students at Marshall County High School through their healing processes has helped her and other staff through their own.
Marshall County Emergency Management Director Curt Curtner said in an email he wants to remind the community of counseling services that are being offered.
"Due to the tragic incident in Florida, we want to reassure our community that if this causes any problems with our children, teachers, or family members, or responders, please reach out to any of the listed agencies for assistance." Curtner said.
