U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie has renewed his call for the United States to withdraw from the United Nations, using Britain’s vote to leave the European Union as a hook.
“Time for ?#?amexit? I’m a cosponsor of H.R. 1205 to get the US out of the UN. ?#?brexit,” Massie wrote on Facebook on June 25.
If approved, the legislation would “terminate all membership by the United States in the United Nations, and in any organization, specialized agency, commission, or other formally affiliated body of the United Nations.”
Proposed in 2015, the measure calls for withdrawing from U.N. programs such as the World Health Organization, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and the UN Environment Program. The U.N.’s headquarters would also be removed from New York under the proposal.
Massie’s spokesperson said the congressman was not available to comment on the legislation beyond what he has posted in the comments section of the Facebook post.
In response to a Facebook comment asking why the measure would be beneficial, Massie wrote: “In one word, Sovereignty.”
“As a member of the UN, we bind our citizens to decisions made by undemocratic countries, when in fact our constitution should be the supreme law,” Massie wrote.
The measure is sponsored by Alabama Republican Rep. Mike Rogers and, along with Massie, cosponsored by Republican Reps. John Duncan of Tennessee, Lynn Westmoreland of Georgia and Tim Huelskamp of Kansas.
