Adoption Task Force Legislation in Senate

A measure that would establish an adoption task force in Kentucky is up for a vote in the State Senate.

Bill Sponsor and House Majority Caucus Chair David Meade says the adoption process needs to be streamlined.

“The more that we pile on to the folks in the adoption process, the harder we make it," Meade said. "So, the whole point of this is to streamline the process, cut as much cost as we possibly can, and make it easier on our families.”

Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services Deputy Commissioner Tim Feeley says the administration is already undertaking a deep-dive review of adoptions in the state. He says that includes a look at cases involving foster children.

“We’re going to speed up the adoption process when we know we cannot reunited the children with the biological parent," Feeley said. "That’s always primary. Then we need to be looking aggressively for permanent homes for our children.”

Feeley says some changes have already been implemented over the last year. He says the state adoption process has been sped up by about two months.
