While Republican Rand Paul's presidential bid has failed to gain much traction, his odds of winning re-election to the U.S. Senate next year appear better. So far, no Democratic challenger has jumped into the race.

Adam Edelen announced he wouldn't run for the seat following his failed bid for re-election as State Auditor last month. Edelen says it's a tough time for Democrats in Kentucky.

“Frankly, I just don’t think the environment is conducive to being able to run a campaign based on ideas free of being weighed down by the influence of Barack Obama in Kentucky," Edelen said. "It has just conspired to make a very difficult environment for any Democrat, I think, to get their message out.”

Edelen says he's taking a break from politics, and plans to open a management consulting firm in Lexington.

Other Democrats who have been mentioned as possible Senate candidates include Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, actress Ashley Judd and state Veterans Affairs Commissioner Heather French Henry.
