The American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee has settled a federal lawsuit sparked by a student's t-shirt in support of gay rights.

The Tennessean reports the lawsuit was filed in November on behalf of a Richland High School senior whom the school system censored after she wore a shirt to the school. The shirt read: “Some People Are Gay, Get Over It.”

The lawsuit said the school's principal prohibited the student from wearing that shirt or any other shirt referencing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights because it might provoke other students.

However, a U.S. District judge wrote a preliminary injunction defending students' rights to wear pro-LGBT apparel to school as long as it does not disrupt the school environment.

Matt Markgraf joined the WKMS team as a student in January 2007. He's served in a variety of roles over the years: as News Director March 2016-September 2019 and previously as the New Media & Promotions Coordinator beginning in 2011. Prior to that, he was a graduate and undergraduate assistant. He is currently the host of the international music show Imported on Sunday nights at 10 p.m.
