5 Days to Go: Bevin, Conway Talk Final Bluegrass Poll Results in Murray

Rob Canning

With five days to go until Kentucky’s gubernatorial election, the final Bluegrass Poll of the race shows Democrat Jack Conway with a five-point lead over Republican Matt Bevin. But Conway told a crowd at the Calloway County Democratic Party's headquarters Wednesday night the race is far from cinched up.

Besides Conway’s 45-40 percent lead over Bevin, the poll shows 6 percent of voters support Independent Drew Curtis and 10 percent remain undecided.

Conway said the race is close, with renewed advertising support for Bevin from the Republican Governors Association, linking Conway to President Obama.

“A five point lead can be lost," Conway said. "The RGA just upped their buy trying to make this race about something that it’s not. They’re in here trying to distort a lot of stuff.”

Bevin’s camp was quick to point out that the poll shows Conway “has failed to convince Kentuckians that he should be our next governor.”

Bevin made an appearance Thursday morning at the Murray-Calloway County Senior Citizens Center where he was introduced by Calloway County judge-executive Larry Elkins, a registered Independent who has endorsed Bevin's candidacy.

Bevin said he's confident the 10 percent of undecided voters will swing the election his way.

“What it tells me is there is great opportunity there," Bevin said. "People are not happy with the way we’re going as a state. They don’t want a rubber stamp for Barack Obama and I think the majority of those 10 percent are our people.”

Polls open next Tuesday, November 3. For Kentucky Public Radio's profile of Drew Curtis, click here. For the profile of Bevin, click here. A profile on Conway will air Thursday afternoon during All Things Considered.
