Rob Canning is a native of Murray, KY, a junior at Murray State University and a news writing intern at WKMS. He majors in TV Production and splits most of his time between class and serving as team captain of the Murray State Rowing Club. Rob's goal is to become a screenwriter, film director or producer and looks to the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie for inspiration. He appreciates good music, mainly favoring British rock n' roll, and approves of anything with Jack White's name on it. When not studying, rowing or writing, Rob enjoys spending his free time with a book or guitar.

NWS Calls For Heavy Rainfall Over Weekend, Flash Flood Watch In Effect Friday

The National Weather Service is predicting widespread heavy rainfall this weekend with a possibility of severe thunderstorms.

A flash flood watch takes effect tonight at 6PM and lasts through 6AM on Sunday for most of our listening area.  

The NWS is predicting heavy rainfall Friday evening after 10PM with wind gusts upwards of 20 miles per hour.

The heaviest rainfall is predicted for Saturday with 2 to 4 inches expected along with a chance of severe thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening with wind gusts near 30 miles-per-hour.

Republican Primary Likely for Hopkinsville Mayoral Race

A republican primary is shaping up in Hopkinsville's mayoral race.

Two candidates have announced their intentions to run for the mayor seat currently held by Dan Kemp.  Kemp announced last month that he won't be seeking re-election

Christian County Chamber of Commerce President Carter Hendricks announced last week he will be stepping down from the Chamber in January to run, and retired business owner Jason McCraw said he plans to file within the week to challenge Hendricks in the May 2014 primary.

State Rep. Imes Pre-files Legislation To Franchise State Park Property

A pre-filed bill sponsored by State Representative Kenny Imes (R-Murray) seeks to give a financial boost to Kentucky State Parks by allowing private companies like restaurants and hotels to lease and develop state property.  

The 5th district republican wants to take existing law relating to private development of Kentucky State Fair Board property and expands it to land owned by the Kentucky Department of Parks.  Imes said he hopes the proposal will help Kentuckians see the big picture of the economic prospects that are going underutilized.

Kentucky's 1st District US Congressman Ed Whitfield has filed to run for an 11th term.  

The Hopkinsville-native filed his candidacy with the Kentucky Secretary of State’s Office Friday.

Honeywell Metropolis Recalls Remaining Laid-Off Workers

Honeywell’s Metropolis plant is bringing back the remaining 11 workers on its recall list to meet its 2014 production targets. 

Plant Manager Jim Pritchett says the recall allows workers to get trained and recertified in time to support plant operations in January.

Carroll Announces Bid For 2nd District State Senate Seat

  Another republican has emerged to run for Kentucky's second district state senate seat.

CEO of Easter Seals West Kentucky Danny Carrol said he'll file his candidacy papers in early January to run for current senator Bob Leeper's soon to be vacant seat.

The Marshall county resident will face fellow republican Dave Hoffman in the May primary.

Winter Weather: Clarksville, TN Reports .4 of Ice and Numerous Power Outages

Update Monday Morning

According to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd  the region had fog overnight in many counties.  A band of light freezing rain that briefly turned to snow swept across Henderson and Webster counties about 2:00 a.m

Temperatures held in the mid-20s which helped salt to continue thawing roads in the overnight hours. 

However, there are still opportunities for re-freezing, as well as some remaining icy spots that require additional treatment.

Land Between the Lakes To Close Amidst Winter Storm Predictions

The impending winter storm has prompted Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area to close all facilities by 5 PM Thursday.  

All visitors will be asked to leave, including campers in backcountry areas.

Mayfield Cancels School Day In Support of Football Championship Game

Mayfield students will get a day off this week to cheer on the football team. Mayfield Independent Schools will be closed this Friday, December 6th to allow faculty, staff and students to support the Mayfield Cardinal Football team at the state championship game.
