New Media Promotion Coordinator, Host of Weekend Energy

Matt "McG" Markgraf joined the WKMS News Team in January 2007, while pursuing his bachelor’s degree in theatre at Murray State. Now he's got a master's degree in creative writing and is hard at work on "the next great American novel" - that is - when he’s not designing and updating the web site, producing commentaries and mixing up some Weekend Energy. Matt enjoys all kinds of music, but has a fondness for wicked beats. He’s at the station throughout the day and sometimes late at night working during the informative bliss of BBC World Service. In March 2011, he was named New Media & Promotions Coordinator for WKMS.

Rand Paul and GOP leaders speak in Murray

Murray, KY – As part of a statewide bus tour, U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul stopped in several western Kentucky towns yesterday. Paul and GOP leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Ed Whitfield, spoke to a large crowd of supporters at Murray State University. Paul says the current Democratic administration is misguided.

No Paducah manager offer yet

Paducah, KY – Paducah Mayor Bill Paxton says there has been no city manager offer to applicant Jeff Pederson. This comes in light of reports he did receive the offer from Pederson's local paper The Grand Island Independent. Paxton says they are still in negotiating. He expects an announcement late this afternoon or tomorrow. Pederson has been city manager in Grand Island, Nebraska for three years. His contract is up at the end of this year.

Candidates Debate in Kentucky's 2nd District

Paducah, KY – Democrat Rex Smith argues he can do better for Kentucky's 2nd District. At a debate at the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce breakfast, Smith and incumbent Senator Bob Leeper sparred over leadership and government practices. Smith, a Paducah businessman, says Kentucky needs new management.

"We rank at or near the bottom in so many major categories that we're now ranked the worst managed of all the states in the United States."

Kentucky Voter Registration Update

Frankfort, KY – Democrats still outnumber Republicans in Kentucky, but Republicans and independents gained some ground this year. Almost 34,000 Kentuckians registered to vote since the May primary, increasing the voter rolls by just over one percent.

"We have about 2.9 million registered voters in Kentucky, which is the second largest in Kentucky's history - just slightly below where we were in the 2008 general election."

Les Fugate of the Secretary of State's office says Democrats still outnumber Republicans in Kentucky.

Republicans Rally in Three Kentucky Cities

Murray, KY – With the election less than a month away, Kentucky Republicans are rallying in western Kentucky tomorrow. Rand Paul, Congressman Ed Whitfield, and Senator Mitch McConnell plan three stops. In the morning, they visit Mayfield at the GOP Headquarters. The three will stump in Bardwell for 1st District State Representative Steve Rudy, who's running for a second term. At two, they'll visit with residents of Murray and Murray State University students at a rally in the university's Curris Center.

Mayoral Debate in Madisonville

Murray, KY – Mayor Will Cox of Madisonville and his challenger David Jackson will meet tomorrow for a debate at 6PM. The debate will be held in West Broadway Elementary School's gymnasium and is open to the public. The Concerned Citizens Society is hosting the event. Tonya Bowman will be moderating the debate between Jackson and Mayor Cox.

Two-week Early Voting Period Begins in Tennessee

Nashville, TN – Early voting is getting under way in Tennessee and election officials expect the turnout could beat the record for a non-presidential year. The early voting period runs from today through October 28th. Democrat Mike McWherter and Republican Bill Haslam are joined by 14 independent candidates running to succeed term-limited Gov. Phil Bredesen.
