Devin Katayama (KPR)
Freelance reporter and producer Devin Katayama has joined WFPL News as a general assignment reporter. His hiring is the third addition to the newsroom since March and is part of Louisville Public Media’s strategic plan to fill the growing void in local news.
“Devin’s arrival allows us to deepen local news coverage,” says WFPL News Director Gabe Bullard. “We’re grateful to be expanding our newsroom and directing resources to issues of vital interest to our listeners and to the larger community. We’re also pleased to introduce Devin’s compelling grassroots journalism to Louisville.”
Prior to joining WFPL, Katayama worked with WBEZ Chicago Public Media’s “Worldview” and Vocalo radio service, KQED’s “The California Report,” KBOO 90.7 – Portland Community Radio Station, and PRX.org. He brings an interest in education and a diverse background to Louisville Public Media, including work in emergency medical services, special needs education, and multimedia journalism.
Katayama earned his Masters in Journalism from Columbia College Chicago where he received the Follett Fellowship and the Studs Terkel Community Media Workshop Scholarship award for his thesis on street youth in Chicago. Originally from Northern California, he received a Bachelor of Arts in English at CUNY Hunter College in New York City.
