Commentary: The Sounds of Silence

Commentator Celia Brewer wonders why we as a society tolerate one form on injustice but loudly protest another. Please note, the thoughts expressed in this commentary are those of the commentator and do not necessarily reflect the views of WKMS or its staff.

Carousel, the 1956 movie made from the hit Broadway musical, recently aired on Turner Classic Movies. Told in flashback, the movie opens with a carnival barker named Billy Bigelow in heaven. He had died in a bungled robbery, desperate for money to support his wife, Julie Jordan, and their baby on the way. Billy is granted a day to return to earth to console his troubled teenaged daughter Louise.

Commentary: Not Understanding Language is Bad for Corporate America

Have you ever tried to contact a business and be patched to a phone operator for whom English is not their native language or has an accent so thick that communicating becomes difficult? If so, commentator Celia Brewer has your sympathy. She says what while she respects all languages and cultures, simple phone calls to American businesses should not be made laborious by the lack of understanding the language and that outsourcing call centers is bad for business.

To Dye or Not to Dye? That is the Question

Commentator Celia Brewer returned to western Kentucky eight years ago. But in another, completely different way, she has also gone back to her roots.

In an episode of the 50s sitcom The Honeymooners, Ralph Kramden comes home to find his wife Alice chatting with her friend Trixie. Ralph, never one for the delicate touch, tries to compliment Trixie on her recent trip to the beauty parlor. “Your hairdo looks nice,” he says, “and the color is almost natural.”
