Former Miss America Heather French Henry has voiced her displeasure with a GOP statement calling her a "bottom-of-the-barrell pick" to run for U.S. Senate against Republican Mitch McConnell.

French Henry said in a blog post last week she'll make a decision on the race soon.

Quinn Prefers IL Senate Gun-Carry Measure

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn says he favors a Senate plan to allow the carrying of concealed weapons in his state. The Democrat says Senator Kwame Raoul's measure contains "reasonable limits and restrictions on guns" and allows local governments to retain their firearms regulations.

KY Lawmakers Don't Want Redistricting Done By Judges

House Republicans who would take a shellacking under a redistricting plan proposed by Democrats still insist they don't want federal judges to redraw legislative boundaries in Kentucky. The Democratic majority in the House has a redistricting proposal ready that could force 11 House Republicans to run against each other next year. And Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear says he plans to call lawmakers to Frankfort for a special legislative session later this year to deal with the issue.

KY Penitentiary Gets Highest Accreditation Score

Kentucky State Penitentiary in Eddyville received the highest score ever recorded for the prison in its recent re-accreditation audit with the American Correctional Association. The prison received a total score of 99 percent. This audit marks the 11th accreditation in the history of the penitentiary, Kentucky's oldest prison facility.

1,700 Arrests And $3.5 Million In Restitution For TennCare

Tennessee’s TennCare Office of Inspector General says there have been more than 1,700 arrests for fraud against the state health care system since 2005. The inspector general's office, which is separate from TennCare, began full operation in February 2005 and has investigated cases leading to more than $3.5 million paid in restitution to TennCare.

IL Lawmakers Moving Forward With Budget

The Illinois Democrat-controlled Legislature is expected to move forward with a new state budget, despite Republican concerns they're spending too much. The Illinois House voted yesterday to send pieces of the approximately $35 billion general fund budget to the Senate. House lawmakers are expected to continue voting on other parts of the spending plan Today.

Beshear's Income Tax Returns Show Earnings of $252K

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear and his wife have released their 2012 state and federal income tax returns showing their total income was just more than $252,000.

That includes the governor's nearly $133,000 salary from the state, plus nearly $56,000 in dividends, more than $37,000 in capital gains and more than $25,000 in Social Security benefits.

IL House Approves Medicaid Expansion

The Illinois House has approved a Medicaid expansion to cover low-income adults who don't have children at home. Expanding the health care program for the poor and disabled is a key part of President Barack Obama's health care law.  House lawmakers approved the measure 63-55 yesterday.

Scenic Tennessee Launches Anti-Litter Campaign

The nonprofit group Scenic Tennessee is promoting an anti-litter campaign combining music, scenic photography and community cleanups with online videos and social networking. The effort begins June 1st with a month-long Pickin' Up Tennessee tour designed to drive home the campaign's message: Love the land. Lose the litter. Pickin' Up Tennessee has enlisted musicians in 20 tour locations to provide a soundtrack for the campaign. Organizers are now seeking clean-up volunteers.

IL Gambling Expansion Bill Being Tweaked

The sponsor of a proposal authorizing new casinos across Illinois says the bill is undergoing various tweaks before fellow lawmakers can vote on it. The plan is expected to come in committee today. Democratic Rep. Robert Rita says the tax rates for new and existing facilities are still being worked out.
