KY Seeking Nominations For Environmental Awards

Kentucky wants to honor individuals, businesses and organizations for inspiring others to protect the state's environment and is asking for nominations. The Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection awards are given to recognize and encourage environmental stewardship. The Division of Compliance Assistance coordinates the awards, which are in their fourth year.

Kentucky Supreme Court Upholds Dunlap Death Sentence

The Kentucky Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence of a Western Kentucky man who pleaded guilty in 2010 to killing three children and attacking their mother near Fort Campbell.

Kentucky Supreme Court Overturns Murder Conviction of Teenager

The conviction and 50-year prison sentence of a Kentucky teenager has been overturned after the Kentucky Supreme Court concluded his confession was coerced. The high court today ordered a new trial for 19-year-old Garrett Thomas Dye. A jury convicted Dye in 2011 of beating his adopted sister to death.

TBI: Women More Likely Family Violence Victims

A new study of domestic violence in Tennessee last year found women were nearly two times more likely to be victimized than men and children were the victims in 16% of all family violence cases. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation put out a report this week analyzing crime statistics from law enforcement agencies across the state.

KY To Receive $6 Million From Online Gambling Case

Gov. Steve Beshear says Kentucky will receive a settlement of more than $6 million from a case involving online gambling.  The case dates back to 2008 when the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet filed suit to seize 141 domain names belonging to Internet gambling companies.

IL State Workers To See Pay Raises

The Associated Press has learned that Gov. Pat Quinn's administration will begin July 1 to pay union workers at the contractual wage rate called for in 2011. There will also be some money for back wages owed, but not all of it.

University of Louisville communications professor Greg Leichty has announced that he'll seek the Democratic nomination to run for U.S. Senate in Kentucky. Leichty made the announcement to his 28 Twitter followers on Sunday.

Urban Outfitters Pulls Pill Glasses

Political leaders in drug-plagued Kentucky say they're pleased that retailer Urban Outfitters has stopped selling flasks, shot glasses and pint glasses that look like prescription pill bottles. The state's top leaders, including Gov. Steve Beshear and U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers, chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, had joined in a push to get the retailer to pull the items, saying they could encourage teens to misuse prescription meds.

Quinn Sets July 9 Deadline For IL Pension Reform Deal

Gov. Pat Quinn has set a July 9 deadline for a bipartisan committee to come up with a solution for Illinois' pension crisis. The Chicago Democrat says lawmakers must move quickly to address the $97 billion unfunded pension liability. He says lawmakers' lack of action is hurting the state's economy.

IL Special Session Expected To Form Pension Committee

Illinois legislators are moving forward with plans to form a bipartisan committee to work for a compromise on pension reform. That’s ahead of a special session called for by Governor Pat Quinn.  The committee was announced after it became clear lawmakers would not break an impasse over whether the Senate's or the House pension reform plan should pass.
